Today is Roman's first birthday.

Pour-over with some Burundi beans I roasted a couple days ago. Out the door around 6:40. Wanted to be moving before the sun.

Florida in late May is the soup. 75 degrees, 94% humidity. The ASICS Megablast{rel="sponsored nofollow"} were on. Cushioned enough that I'm not fighting the road.

01 / The run

Five miles, forty-five minutes. Easy.

Calf was quiet — the only thing I'm watching for right now. Quads were the problem. I did the full Murph on Monday and three days later my legs are still telling me about it.

The heat was the other thing. Once the dew point climbs, sweat stops evaporating — it just sits on you. Body can't cool, heart picks up the slack. Same effort, higher HR. The trick is to be done before it really lands. I almost was.

02 / The year

Most of the run I was thinking about Roman.

A year ago today my wife was in a hospital bed and I had no idea who I was about to become. Now there's a one-year-old in the house who knows my voice.

Running only happens because somebody at home lets it happen.

I get to leave at 6am because my wife stays. Some mornings Roman's up and she's the one on duty while I'm out. That's the actual deal. The run only exists because of the person who isn't running.

03 / Home

Came back, showered, picked up the kid.

He's one. He doesn't know it's his birthday. He will, one day.

The 45 minutes were good. The rest of the day's better.
